Anthony Houseman

Driving Instructor - Harrogate & Knaresborough

Welcome to my page, my name is Anthony Houseman and I have lived here in the heart of Yorkshire all my life. I grew up in Jennyfield and went to Rossett School. I learnt to drive as soon as I was 17, which seems a light-year away but it’s not that long ago really. I remember when I was learning to drive, my instructor took me to the good old Duchy Road area.

I have been an ADI for just shy of 2 years now, and I enjoy every moment of it. It’s always a great experience meeting new pupils from all walks of life, they all share the same interest: They want to learn to drive.

After passing the rigorous testing to become a fully qualified ADI I was unaware of how different the job is in comparison to how I was learning from the tests, there was a very steep learning curve, which I had to adapt to very quickly. I’ve learnt to identify everyone’s needs and wants, therefore changing my teaching styles and techniques to accommodate.

My teaching methods are thorough but simple, I make sure my pupils are taught safe driving for life, not just to pass the driving test. Along with that I keep the pupil engaged by asking theory related questions as we drive, testing firstly their observational skills and their knowledge of the theory in driving.

As an instructor, I am aware of the ‘fears’ some pupils bring to the table and reassure them on their first lesson that as well as themselves being in control that I also have full control of the vehicle., and that the lessons progress differently for everyone, I like to test pupil’s abilities and move them on when I think they’re ready.

As a beginner, we will start in the notorious Duchy Road or depending on where you live perhaps Fairways in Starbeck, both of which are perfect for beginners trying to get a grasp of the controls whilst not worrying too much about other road users. Moving swiftly on when you’ve got the reins to a more busier area, perhaps Jennyfields or Starbeck.

Each lesson has a core learning point whether it being junctions, roundabouts (everyone’s favorite, especially when they mention “The Empress”), country roads or a specific maneuver, we will work together to ensure you have the knowledge and skills to competently complete the task at hand before moving onto something new.

The driving test center is in Knaresborough based at the St. James Retail Park, which is perfect for getting around the area as it is so close to the (A658) aka the Knaresborough bi-pass. From there we can find ourselves going any direction, out towards York, or the opposite way towards Beckwithshaw. This enables you, the pupil, to drive at higher speeds and take in the scenery Harrogate has to offer.

I like to think I am a fun Instructor and easy to get along with, which makes the process of learning to drive more enjoyable throughout. I look forward to teaching any of you and thank you for reading this.

I came to Learn Driving UK as I'd heard so many positive things said by friends at school. They all passed first time, each had different Instructors too! I was still very nervous about the prospect of being out there on the road but was made to feel very at ease and I knew I was in safe hands. The teaching methods were spot on and I really appreciated the patience they showed me on more than one occasion. I got through my test first time too. I'm just sad to have to say goodbye to my instructor. They become a friend as you work through the process, which makes it feel more enjoyable. Thank you Learn Driving UK, you were brilliant! Yes, I would recommend Learn Driving UK
