Joel Sanderson
Driving Instructor - Harrogate & Knaresborough
Hi, I’m Joel! I teach in an automatic electric car and I’m proud to be part of the Learn Driving UK team — helping people become safe, confident, and capable drivers.
I’ve lived in the Harrogate and Knaresborough area all my life, so I know the local roads and driving conditions really well.
With almost 30 years of driving experience, I understand what it takes to build real confidence behind the wheel — whether you’re navigating town traffic, tackling roundabouts, or just getting started with the basics.
Before becoming a driving instructor, I spent 20 years working as a full stack web developer in digital agencies and e-commerce. After two decades behind a desk, I realised I wanted a complete change — something more hands-on, people-focused, and out on the road.
The idea came after block booking skiing lessons for my kids. I already knew how to ski and snowboard, but joining my kids through the learning process — watching them develop their spatial awareness, hazard perception, coordination, and confidence with each session was incredibly inspiring. Seeing their progress reminded me how powerful patient and positive teaching can be, and that experience sparked my decision to train as a driving instructor.
My teaching style is calm, patient, and encouraging. I tailor every lesson to suit each learner’s personality and pace, using positive reinforcement to build confidence step by step. My goal is to help learners not just pass their test, but truly understand the road — developing strong awareness, control, and hazard perception skills for life.
When I’m not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and walking our dog around the beautiful Harrogate and Knaresborough area.
I’m proud to teach with Learn Driving UK and look forward to meeting you — and helping you start your driving journey with confidence.

My driving instructor Joel is good, patient and makes sure he covers every part and that I understand it all. I passed first time in Knaresborough. It was a good experience overall.
