Kevin Winship

Driving Instructor - Scarborough & Whitby

Hi, I’m Kevin a driving instructor with Learn Driving UK. I was born in Scarborough and grew up with my mother and younger brother. I was educated at Barrowcliff Infant/Junior School followed by Scalby School and then finally the Sixth Form College.

I have been happily married to my wife Elaine for over 30 years and we have a very young and energetic dog. When time allows I like nothing better than to take our dog for long walks on the beach or in the countryside. I also like watching sport, particularly football, and follow the local Scarborough team.

I cover Scarborough, Whitby and surrounding areas. Each town has numerous quiet areas where you can learn and practise your first few hours behind the wheel with very little traffic around. This is crucial as it is very important for beginners, or less confident drivers to learn the basics before moving onto busier and more demanding areas. Once you have a good grasp of the basics and feel confident to move out of what we call the “nursery roads” we will move into areas which have more vehicles & pedestrians. This will allow you to gain more experience controlling the vehicle in busier areas whilst dealing with the unpredictability of other road users.

The next progressive step is to move into more advanced areas with high volumes of traffic and pedestrians. You will only do this once you, and I, are happy with your progress. Varying the time of day when you have your lesson will also have a bearing on the volume of traffic. For instance there will be more traffic on the road during the school run and during rush hour. Moving onto the more advanced routes will give you experience in what it will be like driving in normal day to day conditions which will make you more capable of driving confidently in all areas and conditions. We will spend a considerable time in Scarborough, often going out towards Filey and surrounding villages such as Seamer, Ayton, Osgodby and Cayton. This will allow us to spend time travelling on country roads. It is important to practise on the types of road you will encounter on your driving test, particularly in areas which are more demanding.

For those of you in Whitby we will spend a lot of time familiarising yourself with the town but will also venture out onto the surrounding roads to gain experience of driving in the country. In my experience other road users are generally respectful of learner drivers and give them plenty of space. This helps make things a little less stressful for learner drivers. Being a local lad, I know the area extremely well and after completing your driver training you will too.

Teaching people to drive is a second career for me and I chose this because I wanted a job where I could see something through from start to finish. I get great satisfaction from teaching someone who has had no driving experience to drive safely and confidently on the roads which will ultimately lead to successfully passing the driving test. Teaching people to drive is both challenging and rewarding.

I am very patient and pride myself with being very flexible. Lessons will be adapted to your ability which will allow you to progress at your own pace. This helps those of you who may be anxious or scared at the prospect of going onto roads with other vehicles. We would not move onto more advanced areas until you were happy to do so. I am member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and have been recruited by North Yorkshire Police to instruct on the practical phase of the National Driver Awareness Courses.

Driving lessons are not exclusively for beginners, so if you want to start to learn or have passed your test but would like refresher training I would like the opportunity to teach you.
Still not convinced? Why not give us a try?

I look forward to meeting you in the near future.
